I'm exhausted by the thought of a year-end list. It seems like an arbitrary cut-off as many albums I enjoy now were released last year or 20 years ago. Plus, you can read Too Poppy and easily get a sense for what I've enjoyed and experienced this past year. Obviously the new Matthew Sweet album was a high point of the year, as was the new, loose Fireman release. Fleet Foxes shockingly lives up to the hype whereas the new Oasis deserves a bit more. And at year's end, I simply cannot get Kings of Leon's Sex on Fire out of my head. I also can't forget that I was blown away by stellar live performances by Radiohead, Flaming Lips, and Wilco. Wow. 2008 was alright.
If you're seeking a more substantive review of the year that was, I invite you to a former Too Poppy contributor's yearender. Otherwise, you know where else to look.
Happy New Year, Poppers. Cheers!

It's Getting More Impossible to Keep a Straight Face
Blue October's new album, Approaching Normal, will hit stores 3/24 - and they're going GLOBAL:
"It's real exciting because the last record (2006's platinum 'Foiled') did real well here (in the U.S.) and just never really got that chance (in Europe). One thing we all said was, 'Man, the next record, we've got to go global,' so right off the bat as part of our campaign we'll go over and start making a splash overseas."Ok. As for the sound:
Noveskey says the dynamic range of the album is more "dramatic-slash-theatrical" than its predecessors and spans "from the saddest, most depressing moments to the happiest, most joyful moments we've ever done." "Approaching Normal" includes studio versions of older fan favorites such as "Kangaroo Cry" and "Graceful Dancing" and will also come out in explicit and "clean" versions, each containing a different bonus track.Ok. I've yet to explore the Blue October sound, but Way2Poppy digs it. Their quotes and photo at Billboard.com, though, left me a bit irritated in a Rob-Thomas-trying-too-fucking-hard kinda way. Maybe I'm just ready for this year to end, who knows.

He's Keeping Busy

Chicago singer/songwriter/violinst Andrew Bird has a distincitve style with his melodic multi-layered instrumentation and beautiful wide-ranging vocals. After an incredible performance to thousands of fans at this years' 80/35, Bird now embarks on a tour with many notable stops including Carnegie Hall in New York and Chicago's Civic Opera House. His new album Noble Beast will be released on Jan. 20.I saw a few songs of his 80/35 performance while waiting for Flaming Lips to start. It didn't cut through the clutter, but everything I've heard about this guy is that you must see him live. He'll be at Hoyt Sherman Place on 2/28, which would be a cool venue in which to see him. Tix available via RipoffMaster or Hoyt Sherman Place.
On a related note, as they've done before, NPR is going to preview his new album starting 1/3 so save this link.

Some Forever Not For Better

The New York Times has a nicely done tribute to those we lost in the music world this year. The pacing is a bit odd with the pause on some artists longer than others, and a feeling towards the end that the creators were running out of time, but still interesting.

All of This Can Be Yours
U2 is releasing No Line on the Horizon on March 3, produced by Eno, Lanois, and Lillywhite.
12/23 UPDATE: Billboard.com reports the album will have five different configurations with the most expensive priced at $96. How big of a fan are you?
Among the songs expected to appear on the album are the title track, "Moment of Surrender" and "Unknown Caller." One source who has heard several of the songs in their early forms described them to Billboard as "amazing and a little out there. I hope they don't change anything."Let's hope it's not an [atomic] bomb.

Beyond the standard CD and double vinyl packages, "Horizon" will be offered in three additional limited editions.
The digi-pack version, which lists for $35.98, has the CD in a cardboard folded sleeve with a 36-page booklet, a fold-out poster and "a new film from Anton Corbijn featuring the music of U2," the latter of which is available as a download.
The magazine version, for $49.98, finds the CD housed in "a special 60-page soft cover magazine-style book," and also includes the downloadable Corbijn film.
Lastly, the box set version comes, naturally, in a box with a 60-page hardcover book, a second poster and the Corbijn film on DVD.

I've become notorious for avoiding buzz, often at my own detriment. This is obviously the case with Kings of Leon. Listening to XM this morning, i was struck by what a killer track Sex On Fire is - absolutely killer. This will be Classic Rock. I simply can't get it out of my head.

It's Never Good to be Understood by a Girl Named Acid Wash

The Caulfields, the band I grew up in and toured the world with in the 90's, will be appearing on the Wilmington, DE station 93.7 WSTW this Sunday 12/14 from 9-11pm. We'll be guests on "Hometown Heroes" hosted by Mark Rogers and it will be the band's first live radio interview since August of 1997, when we announced our break-up on "The Planet" in Detroit, MI (oh the drama! ;) If you're in the DE/PA/NJ area, tune in this Sunday! You can also hear it live at: http://wstw. com OR check out the podcast which the station will post within a few days of the show! http://www. wstw. com/heroes/Sweet. The Echoes Belong to Someone
Pitchfork laments the hard-to-swallow truth that The Postal Service may never release a follow up to Give Up, their unexpectedly excellent debut album from 2003. Despite what we've reported in the past, Ben Gibbard seemed to quash our hopes in a recent Rolling Stone interview:
It’s the record that never seems to want to come out. It’s also just never been a priority for either Jimmy [Tamborello, Postal Service co-founder] or myself. The anticipation of the second record has been a far bigger deal for everybody except the two of us.Glad I saw them live back in the day - awesome show and cool album.

Guster is a band. Guster was at one time one of my favorite bands. Guster has since released a couple ok albums, but none that met the Too Poppy promise of Lost and Gone Forever, although others might disagree. Guster is on a new label and is now working on a new release that they hope to complete in February. Guster has fathered children.

Feel a Sense of Child-like Wonder

And The Home Got Snowed In

The music evokes a Cold Mountain-esque traipse through snow-blanketed mountainsides and the rewarding heat of hot apple cider trickling down through your insides. Despite their Seattle origin, you could swear these guys are from Appalachia - and they're so damn good at getting me to wax poetic about the emotional appeal of their album.
But rest assured it is not another soundtrack to O Brother Where Art Thou. As traditional and folksy as it immediately feels, you'll soon discover rich tunes that are thoroughly modern and worth many repeat listens.
While this mix could be contrived or indulgent, Fleet Foxes use restraint, structuring their flourishes into three- and four-minute pop songs full of chiming melodies and harmonies that sound like they've been summoned from centuries of traditional songs and are full of vivid, universal imagery: mountains, birds, family, death.I can't quite tell you song names or sing back a chorus yet, but this one is the best slow burn you need for the dark, cold months ahead.

For Some Reason I Can't Explain
Don't know if you've been following the Satriani / Coldplay controversy or not. Satriani is accusing Coldplay of infringing on his righteous tunage. Coldplay says, "nah, just coincidence." I typically shrug at these lawsuits because music is so derivative that there's bound to be similar chord structures and melodies from time to time. I doubt Coldplay nefariously felt they needed to steal from Joe to get ahead - um, they're already ahead - but then I watched this video that Billboard.com posted:
Uncanny really, and kinda cool. Who knows. I think Viva La Vida is a great song and this will in no way diminish my enjoyment of it. Can't we all just get along?

We Forward in This Generation Triumphantly

U2, Coldplay, the Killers, the Dixie Chicks, John Legend, R.E.M. and Bob Dylan are on board for the initiative, which is an outgrowth of the Bono-reared activist organization (RED).I don't know exactly what it means that it will be downloaded to a custom player and into iTunes (DRM-crippled?), but this thing has potential. The other feature is that you can forward two free issues to friends and if they join, you'll end up reaping some rewards from that.
For $5, users will receive a new issue of RED(WIRE) every Wednesday, featuring an exclusive song from a major artist, a song from an artist (RED) aims to showcase, a multimedia piece that could encompass video or photography and a look at how proceeds are directly benefiting Africans in need. The materials will be downloaded to a custom player and automatically loaded into iTunes.
Oh, and not mentioned are a couple tunes of Elvis Costello and the Police jamming. Good work!

Like a Serenade of Sound

Six tracks are leftovers from the Brian Eno-produced "Vida" sessions, many of which make noticeable, if not exactly terrifying, departures from the band's swelling rockery. "Life in Technicolor ii" (which is a song, Chris Martin cracks on the band's Web page) gets words, "Glass of Water" is unusually bombastic, and "Rainy Day" sports a jittery electro beat in the vein of U2's "Zooropa."I don't get the collaboration with Jay-Z, but I guess everybody needs a gimmick. I actually quite enjoy Viva La Vida - especially the title track and Strawberry Swing - so I'll likely pick this up as well.
Did I Tell You I Need You?
In promoting his new Fireman album (out tomorrow in the states), Paul McCartney provided an update on when The Beatles' catalog(ue) might hit iTunes:
Update: Here's a decent write-up of the situation at Apple 2.0. I'd have the agree that the window is rapidly passing for the digital Beatles to be a huge success unless they just knock it out of the park with marketing, extras, etc. I think most casual fans already have the songs they want ripped from CD's or "borrowed" from friends.
"We are very for it, we've been pushing it. But there are a couple of sticking points, I understand. So the last word I got back was that it had stalled, the whole process.Right, so, in the meantime, just rip those crappy-sounding CDs you already have and get by for a while.
"They [EMI] want something we're not prepared to give them. Hey, sounds like the music business.
"It's between EMI and The Beatles. What else is new."

I've Waited So Long
Billboard.com recently spoke with Fountains of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger to get a progress report on the next FOW album:
He also reported he's working on a new Ivy album as well. It'll be a long while before that one's out, though.
"We still have a ways to go, but we have eight songs that are relatively close to complete now. We're looking to regroup after the New Year and do the second batch," Schlesinger tells Billboard.com. "I think we're trying some different things on this record, but we're still the same band, to me. It's kind of too early to say what direction it's going to as a whole."I hope doing "different things" means getting away from the Stacy's Mom FOW and back to the Troubled Times FOW - or at least finding the right balance of the two. The last album faded fast for me because it seemed too gimmicky.

But I Don't Want To Do It
In this entertaining AV Club review of Guns n' Roses' Chinese Democracy, I can't decide which is funnier: the conversation among the almost-always entertaining commenting class about ironic facial hair or this line in the review:
On the aforementioned "Sorry," Rose suddenly sings an otherwise innocuous line ("But I don't want to do it") in some bizarre, quasi-Transylvanian accent, and I cannot begin to speculate as to why.LOL indeed.

There Is Nothing Wrong With the Music Business
Music biz innovator Ian Rogers gave a fascinating keynote address at the GRAMMY Northwest MusicTech Summit a couple of weeks ago about the need for the music industry to adapt to the new world. It's a great read for those of us on the fringe as well as any of you who make a living in the music business.
via BoingBoing
I’d like to challenge you to consider a different perspective, IMHO the only perspectives that matter, that of the artist and the fan.Nutty concept. In the address, Rogers provides some results to the David Byrne/Brian Eno experiment we told you about a couple of months ago.

If You Want to Kiss the Sky
"The president of the company is singing better than ever and the tracks are wildly innovative. I would never have thought things would have gone this way. I believe, well, rock 'n' roll has been reinvented one more time."Hmm, I wonder who DL could possibly be talking about...
Don't Dream It's Over
Neil Finn follows up his 2001 live album 7 Worlds Collide in similar form in the studio by convening with part of Radiohead, all of Wilco, Johnny Marr, son Liam, and others. They'll gather in New Zealand over the holidays to record.
The amount of talent in that one studio will be jaw-dropping. As a bonus, all proceeds go to charity. Stunning.

Now

Electric Arguments is sometimes bluesy and gritty, with McCartney howling against fuzzy guitars ("Nothing Too Much Just Out of Sight"), sometimes delicate and beautiful ("Two Magpies") and sometimes lush and elegant ("Sing the Changes"). At times, the album veers off into entirely experimental directions, like the mash of ambient noises and sound effects on "Universal Here, Everlasting Now."I'm very excited about this one. This link should be live with a stream tonight.

Barcelona!
Paul McCartney is lobbying for a legendary unreleased Beatles "tune" to be released, but considering the others vetoed its inclusion on the comprehensive Anthology series, I'm not too hopeful. Carnival of Light is a 14-minute experimental piece the boys recorded in 1967.
Someday.
It reportedly includes distorted guitar, organ sounds, gargling and shouts of "Barcelona!" and "Are you all right?" from McCartney and John Lennon.I appreciate efforts to release every last note the Beatles ever recorded, so let's make this a two-fer and release it with the mythical 27-minute version of Helter Skelter.
Someday.

I Can't Shut Off This Stereo

1. The new record - All Of Us In Our Night - is available for purchase in hard copy directly from the band. Any other copy is false and treasonous.I don't find it yet on the "online digital music purveyor[s]." It's a mystery. Typo? Soon please? Check out tour dates - heavy in the native Georgia - and tunes streaming at TheirSpace.
2. The album will be released nationally on January 20th, 2009, distributed across the country courtesy of Redeye Distribution.
3. At this time you can find the record on iTunes, eMusic, or any other online digital music purveyor with an uppercase second letter.
4. Until that point, the album is for sale to the true patriots only at Modern Skirts shows across this great land.

Many of you are big fans of Roger Joseph Manning Jr. (Jellyfish, Imperial Drag, Moog Cookbook, TV Eyes, also Beck, Air, Morrissey, Glen Campbell, Cheap Trick and more). It's been a bit less than a year since Catnip Dynamite was released in Japan. This is indeed great news for all of you unwilling/unable to pay import prices. A release date is unclear at this point, but I'll keep digging. It also appears the track list is a bit different and longer than the Japan-only release. Sweet.
Roger has a new record coming out on Oglio Records, home to my latest release "Wisely". As his label-mate, I've been invited to welcome him to Oglio, in a sort of "Rush Week" gesture, with an artist-on-artist video interview (aka: a Paddling).

The Same Me That Stands Here Now
Evidently, Paul McCartney "stole the show" yesterday at the MTV Europe Music Awards where he was named Ultimate Legend.
"This is the man who invented my job," said U2 lead singer Bono, introducing McCartney.Brilliant. After the well-received Memory Almost Full (by me at least) and his upcoming Fireman project, which looks to breathe some - well - fire into his career, perhaps it should have been the Ultimate Living Legend award. Congrats, Macca.

JANUARY 27TH, 2009Regarding the new studio album, it's about f-ing time! Enough with the tributes and live albums - well, keep 'em coming as long as they don't interfere with new stupid albums!

This is both of our two recent BEATLES TRIBUTE CDs in 12" Audiophile Vinyl packaged together in one collectible fold out/gatefold sleeve/package, and there is also talk that comic legend Jack Davis (MAD MAGAZINE & EVERYTHING ELSE!) might be personally signing/autographing the "B-SIDES" cover he did for us.
MARCH 24TH, 2009
A brand-new Smithereens original album/CD (the first all-new original compositions/recordings studio CD in 10 years!) (KOCH) This is being written in now and will be recorded in New Jersey in December 2008.

Matthew Sweet superfan and fairly frequent Too Poppy commentator Dan has established a new Matthew Sweet message board. As a decidedly old school web tool, I still find message boards to be a great source of information as well as a great place to commiserate with fellow fanatics; and I've missed the official Sweet forum since he updated his site and eliminated it (although it was overrun with porn spam anyway.)
Nice work. Thanks, Dan! Now join up!

UPDATE: Billboard notes it's based on the Rock Band platform but will not be branded as Rock Band. Further confirmation of this at IGN.
BTW: Jeff Jones, Apple Corps chief executive said of digital distribution of The Beatles' catalog, "All I can say is that we're still working out the details, we have no announcement to make, no date or any information."

Say It's Not True

In an unclear attempt at capitalizing on a legacy name in danger of tarnish, Queen + Paul Rodgers (- Freddie Mercury) have a new album available: The Cosmos Rocks. Hmm.
Finally, what is it with me + equations today?
The New Morning Light
October has been busy month of vacations, work, illness, etc. I'm just trying to come up with an excuse for failing to share a free Fireman track courtesy of NME.com.
The Fireman = Paul McCartney + Youth - the inhibitions that keep Macca from letting loose. With this new release by Fireman, he certainly seems to be letting loose. The previous Fireman track I've heard, Sing the Changes, was quite a treat. Now it's time for Nothing Too Much Just Out of Sight, and it's quite a departure from Sing the Changes or most of McCartney's music. If you think you need to hear more of the Paul McCartney behind Helter Skelter, Oh! Darling, and Why Don't We Do It In the Road, here you go.

You Do It To Yourself, You Do
To me, MTV became irrelevant with the 7th season of Real World vs. Road Rules. Don't even get me started on their programming today (I would likely throw out phrases like bottom dwelling and soul suckers.)
Well, today I'm reluctantly giving kudos to MTV for launching MTV Music online this week. Get this novel concept: MTvM will show music videos.
Wait.
Give that some time to percolate.
Music videos.
On MTV.
Music Television.
Music Television Music.
Hmm, nobody said they were brilliant. Nonetheless, kudos to getting back to basics. The site is nice and simple, void of all the ridiculous noise of mtv.com that made watching videos impossible. I've embedded one of my favorite videos just to see how it works. Enjoy.

The Fleeting Triumphs, Brazen Lies

Or if you prefer the deluxe version with extra songs & videos, or you read this after October 28th, buy from iTunes.
I haven't listened to the album yet (as it's currently downloading), but will sure to post a review at some point.

If You're Small and on a Search

Today is the last day to stream it online here. If you miss it, you'll have to wait for the inevitable release on DVD. If you want to download the tunes from the documentary, you can visit iTunes, where they have conveniently set up a special iMix.

Chimpanzee Riding on a Segway
The following was shared on the Andy Sturmer email list and I couldn't resist sharing. The original post pondered whether this was Andy himself.
I didn't think it was and it was quickly shared that the artist responsible is Parry Gripp, lead Nerf Herder. Seems like he's taking Nerf Herder's tendencies toward jokey music in a different direction and coming up with ridiculous jingles about ridiculous topics. He's got a ton of them. Check them out on his site or his YouTube site. Download them at iTunes. Love it.
